Genealogy research has always been a fun and interesting hobby. You may simply want to know your heritage or you may be hoping to find a link to infamous people. Your ancestry speaks volumes about where certain family tales came from or how they got started. Knowing these dates will save you time and trouble in your research.
Records From 1848 to 1899
The earliest known birth and death records were recorded in Massachusetts in 1841. It wasn’t until 1848 that New Jersey did the same. In 1852 Rhode Island began recording vital records. Washington D.C. began recording death records in 1855 but it wasn’t until 16 years later in 1871 that they began recording birth records. Vermont followed suit in 1857 and Michigan started ten years later in 1867. New York and Iowa began in 1880 followed by Delaware in 1881. Maine was next in 1892 followed by Hawaii in 1896. Connecticut began in 1897 and Maryland started in 1898 followed by Florida in 1899.
Records From 1900 to 1907
Indiana began recording death records in 1900 while Minnesota began recording birth and death records the same year. Oregon and Texas followed in 1903. 1905 brought in California, Nebraska, new Hampshire, South Dakota and Utah. It wasn’t until 1906 that Pennsylvania began recording vital data. 1907 birth and death records can be found for Colorado, Montana, Washington state and Wisconsin. Indiana began recording births in that same year as they were already recording death records.
Records From 1908 to 1910
1908 brought in Alabama, North Dakota and Oklahoma. Arizona, Ohio and Wyoming began in 1909 followed by Missouri in 1910. Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky and Nevada were next in 1911 and Mississippi and Virginia began in 1912.
