Late sixteenth and early seventeenth century Peru was awash with bloody turmoil, and religious conversion. This sets the scene for the birth, life and death of the first New World canonized saint; Saint Rose of Lima.
Rose was born and christened Isabel Florez de Oliva, in Lima, Peru in a family of eleven children in 1586. Sometime in her youth, it is legend that an indigenous woman exclaimed that Rose was as beautiful as a rose, and that is when the nickname cam about. Her parents, Gaspar Florez and Mary Oliva, were Spanish immigrants to Peru. They were significant and wealthy in their community and had wished for Rose to be married and have a family of her own. Rose had different plans then her parents’ and at a rather young age, she began her life of ritualistic self flagellation, starvation and endless piety.

At the young age of five, Rose announced that she was going to dedicate her life to God and remain chaste. By the age of fourteen, Rose was confirmed into the Catholic Church, and took Saint Catherine as her patron. Rose admired and took Saint Catherine’s vow of extreme behavior as a way to show her love for God.
