The news came out on October 23rd, 2010 that another failure to make the grade had occurred. This time it is lorcaserin that is the wanna-be-on-the-market prescription weight-loss drug turned down like many before it by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Without FDA approving a pharmaceutical company's New Drug Application (NDA) the drug goes nowhere and all that effort and research is for naught. Just ask Arena Pharmaceuticals and Eisai Inc., the makers of lorcaserin, though don't ask them just yet as they say they will continue to try to get FDA approval for the product that they, naturally, still believe in.
Money and Health at Stake
The stakes are high when it comes to being granted the right to put a prescription weight loss drug on the market. The number of buyers of a medication with weight-loss properties that does not damage health is, in a world that adds more overweight people by the minute, astronomically high.
