Many, many years ago, Gordon Dick had a dream. He saw a local First Nations gallery and studio that would house Nuu-chah-nulth West Coast art in the traditional territories of the Tseshaht First Nation, nestled deeply in Vancouver Island's Alberni Valley. The art would be carefully chosen in different styles and genres so that people would come from far and wide to appreciate, learn from, and buy the pieces.
The gallery would carry so many varying regional pieces, in fact, it would inevitably teach people how to discern artistic First Nations styles from one area of the West Coast to another. His dream also included a production studio and carving shed where people could watch large projects being turned into permanent Nuu-chah-nulth masterpieces.
The Ahtsik Gallery and Studio has been an idea turning over in Dick’s head for over a decade, but is now a reality in the Tseshaht community. In autumn 1996, Dick sought out the perfect spot to build his future gallery, after “getting serious” about art in early 1995.
